A footbridge and 3.25 miles of trails provide access for hiking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, and nature and wildlife observation. Three spurs connect the main trail to a residential community, the Lake Villa Baseball Park and Longwood Centre Park, home to the historic Lehmann Mansion.
Sun Lake Forest Preserve is located in Lake Villa. The preserve's main entrance is located on the south side of Grass Lake Road, just west of Deep Lake Road and east of Route 83.
